So Long Now 02:01
I got my head on straight / after talking to you, dear All that cryin's late / you should've thought it out clearer You told me the same old stories / same old stories about it You told me the same old stories / same old sorries and bullshit But it's too late, too far / it's too gone, so long now But it's too late, too far / it's too gone, so long now I got my timing right / the lessons starting to smolder Packed my burdens light / looked back once / and started all over You wanted to say you're sorry / but that changed nothing about it You wanted to say you're sorry / sorry's just a cheap way around it But it's too late, too far / it's too gone, so long now But it's too late, too far / it's too gone, so long now Yeah it's too late, too far / it's too gone, so long now

An adverse wind / seeps into the hole and down again Spilling out just like a box / of razors, sharp / and full of pins The rain comes in / leaking through the floor and down the drain Peaking where the sun remembers not / or how / to warm again Now and then / those fading memories come back again Vivid like a photo held / up to the mirror / to view and then You begin / to question all the things that might have been Regretting all the moments fraught / with dangers they / contain within An adverse wind / seeps into the hole and down again Spilling out just like a box / of razors, sharp / and full of pins The rain comes in / leaking through the floor and down the drain Peaking where the sun remembers not / or how / to warm again

It's clever, to run in separate circles / And it's better, to ignore the curtain's call It's clever, to pretend that all the best is at hand But it's not clever, to trust you at all / No it's not clever, to trust you at all It’s smart, to say things in whispers / To hold this conversation further down the hall It’s smart, to close off all the doors that you can But it’s not smart, to trust you at all / No it’s not smart, to trust you at all. It’s good, to think fondly of the future / And the past, to gloss over all the falls It’s good, to look at every moment in time But it’s not good, to trust you at all / No it’s not good, to trust you at all. It’s safe, to protect your own interests / Gather strength, from friends when they call It’s safe, to protect all the love that you have But it’s not safe, to trust you at all / No it’s not safe, to trust you at all / No it’s not safe, to trust you at all

You picked me up when you were falling, falling / three steps on the way down. Worries top-down eased by holding, holding / Slapback silences on... I don’t think anyone’s around / see blacks and whites and pearls around Always change the grade, to help you pass the test. Someone’s always leaving over you...... You shot me up when you were lonely, lonely / to act up on the way down You give that sense to all around me, ‘round me / I loved that photo you’re on.... I don’t think anyone’s around / But you still keep me out of bounds Always change the grade, to help you pass the test. Someone’s always leaving over you Zip me up, I’m just a past time, past time / Breeze by on the way out Run on back, that mirror’s fixed now, fixed now / The pieces never looked so good I don’t think anyone’s around / You know I’d fall for you right now Always change the grade, to make me fail the test. Someone’s always leaving over you......leaving over you (x3) woah woah oh woah.....

Hometown 02:46
Turn the lights, turn the lights down on 17th street / Find the line through the circle where the two ends meet It’s a world all around with sound / of a buzzing hive filling the street So turn the lights, turn the lights down on 17th street What the truth is, it’s a watershed moment / it’s glorified lightning when the sun goes down It’s an earwig, it’s a chance to find cover / a sound to discover when the sun goes down Climb the world to the top of a two-lane street Turn around, looking back, the world’s under your feet Time to leave, time to leave, but pay attention to the heartstrings drawing you back So return, before the end draws you out from your sleep 'Cause there’s a reason, it’s a chance to discover / a time like no other when the lights go down It’s moving onward, it’s not the ending to the story / it’s a time to draw closer when the curtains close down What the truth is, it’s a watershed moment / it’s glorified lightning when the sun goes down It’s an earwig, it’s a chance to find cover / a sound to discover when the sun goes down

about

There comes a time for every album where whoever created the thing gets to say a few words. No one’s buying CDs anymore, and streamed songs don’t come with liner notes, so here’s my attempt to bridge the gap.

This EP (I hesitate to call it an ‘album’, because that makes it sound much more put-together than it really is) is the result of decades of wanting. Wanting to be a singer, wanting to be a songwriter, wanting to be a guitar player. I won’t say that I’m good at any of them, but there’ve been a lot worse than me so I’ll just say that I’m competent. I started to get the bug to put something together in the last few years, not as a result of a global pandemic but just because I was tired of playing at something rather than actually doing it.

It’s flawed, obviously. There are flubbed chords, ‘off’ vocals and notes, a goofed vocal melody when I thought I’d try and be tricky with something at one point, there’s bleed-over from the guitar into the vocal mic. The lyrics have been written, adjusted, some scrapped and completely re-written at one point, and finally settled on or for. I try to think “Would any of my musical heroes say this?”; I inevitably come to the conclusion that they wouldn’t, but I’m trying to come to the point where I’m comfortable that I said it.

I could have done take after take after take and tried for perfection, but I’ve read too many books about Guided By Voices/Robert Pollard and came to the conclusion that rough and ready is good enough. Don’t waste time trying for perfection, don’t use “it’s not right” as an excuse not to get the song out there. Just do it, get it good enough, and move on to the next one.

I have to thank a bunch of people:

My wife, Karen, for all her love and encouragement and support. You’re the world to me, even if I’m not great at showing or saying it as often or as well as I should.

My family in Columbus: Mom, Ian/Michelle/Madison/Orion/Marshall, and Glenna. A lot of tragedy in recent years has brought us closer, and even if we don’t see each other very often it’s like no time has passed whenever we do.

Chuck and Laura – you’ve been family to me for so long now, I think it’s been longer that we’ve known each other than we haven’t at this point. All my love to you both.

The Roundabouts and the Mostly Acoustic Jam folks – you’ve all encouraged me and helped me grow, and I’m thankful to you all.

The Ypsilanti Alehouse – a great place for bands and singer/songwriters to play, a gem of the Ypsilanti community.

Barb, Carol, and Laura – thank you for your friendship, and for making work not suck.

All writing, engineering, production, and mastering are by Josh McCullough, so you know exactly who to blame. All songs were recorded using the following equipment (any deficits in song and sound quality are due solely to the writer/performer and not the equipment):

Microphone: Marantz MPM-1000 condenser

Guitar: Fender Player Series Acoustasonic Telecaster - Shadow Black

Amp Interface: Valeton GP-200 running a Fender Twin Reverb model, with and without distortion, compression, and reverb to try and cover up a distinct lack of skill

Strings: D’Addario Acoustic XS Phosphor Bronze .011-.052

Picks: Dunlop Tortex Flex Standards .73mm

Recorder: Tascam DP-008EX digital recorder

Josh McCullough is endorsed by the following brands:

None. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Not a single one. But he loves his Fender Tele and new Taylor 150e 12-string that may make an appearance on another album, if there is one……..
